We are pleased to announce the “AI and Privacy in the Global South” session (October 3rd) at MediaNama’s PrivacyNama 2024 conference.

The “AI and Privacy in the Global South” panel discussion focuses on the intersection of AI development and Data Protection from a Global South perspective, especially when it comes to challenges in development unique to such nations. How are countries in the Global South responding to the AI boom? How has this affected privacy regulation in these countries? How do they compare to data protection regulations in other jurisdictions?
To answer these questions and more, we will be in conversation with:
Nicolás Grossman, Project Director of the Global Index on Responsible AI at the Global Center on AI Governance

Nicolas Grossman is the Project Director of the Global Index on Responsible AI at GCG. He has led the design of a comprehensive measurement framework for responsible AI and supervised an expansive data collection programme in over 140 countries. Nicolás is a sociologist, specialising in research and global measurements on data for public good and responsible AI. Before joining GCG, Nicolas was the research and data lead for the Global Data Barometer and spearheaded the Open Data and Data Journalism strategy for Properati, a private-sector real-state platform. He is completing his Master’s in Political Sociology at the National University of Tres de Febrero, where his focus is on studying the challenges of big data and AI in less developed countries.
Luca Belli, Professor, Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) Law School

Luca Belli is a Professor at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) Law School, Rio de Janeiro, where he heads the Center for Technology and Society (CTS-FGV) and the CyberBRICS project. He is also Associated Researcher at the Centre de Droit Public Comparé of Paris 2 University, Member of the Board of the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), and Director of the Latin-American edition of the Computers Privacy and Data Protection Conference (CPDP LatAm).
His work is at the interface of law and technology and focuses primarily on Internet access, data protection and digital platform regulations, and digital policies in the BRICS countries. He enjoys developing multistakeholder partnerships to analyse existing challenges and put forward creative solutions.
Merl Chandana, Team Lead – Data, Algorithms and Policy Team, LIRNEasia

Merl Chandana is the Team Lead of the Data, Algorithms, and Policy (DAP) team at LIRNEasia. Recently, he led the efforts of one of two research hubs in Asia that contributed to the publication of the Global Index on Responsible AI. He currently serves on the Sri Lankan Task Force for the National Strategy for AI, where he drives the efforts on Trust, Safety, and Responsible Artificial Intelligence. Before joining LIRNEasia, Merl was a team member of the Analytics Unit of the Ministry of National Policies and Economics Affairs, Sri Lanka.
Linh Tong, Deputy Director, Center for Education Promotion and Empowerment of Women (CEPEW)

Linh Tong is currently the Deputy Director of the Center for Education Promotion and Empowerment of Women (CEPEW) and a member of the ITU’s Youth Advisory Board. She is committed to promoting inclusive governance of digital technology by engaging vulnerable groups like ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, youth, and women leaders. Linh has actively promoted applications of AI tools to enhance Vietnamese citizens’ access to information and public services. She is working on a report discussing the importance of protecting cultural/linguistic diversity and gender equality in the design and development of AI systems and tools in Vietnam. She also served as a country researcher for the Global Index on
Responsible AI.
