New Hampshire pilot Scott Poteet reflects on historic Polaris Dawn Mission
A New Hampshire man shared his experience piloting the historic Polaris Dawn Mission.
Scott Poteet, a retired U.S. Air Force pilot, described everything from preparation to takeoff as life-changing.
Poteet led a crew of three into space, reaching the highest orbit from Earth since the 1970s.
They also performed the first-ever civilian spacewalk, testing new SpaceX-engineered spacesuits, which the crew said performed “spectacularly.”

“To see the world— it has this immense glow to it and it’s perfection because we saw the earth from so many different perspectives, different altitudes, different orientations. It just gives you a different viewpoint of what Earth is and looks like. When you’re so high, 1400 kilometers above the earth looking down,” Poteet said.
Poteet said that while the mesmerizing views were brief, the majority of their time was spent focusing on the science and research aspect of the trip.
“That whole experience, having it for five days. It just changes your attitude and viewpoint of what’s going on on earth. You just wish everyone could have that opportunity to see the world from that viewpoint,” Poteet said.
